Born in London, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall grew up in Gloucestershire and was educated at Eton, after which he read psychology and philosophy at Oxford. After university, he worked briefly as a sous chef and then embarked on a career in journalism and broadcasting, following his passion for food and cookery focused on local, seasonal and ethically produced ingredients. Between 2006 and 2014 he wrote a weekly column for the Guardian.
Fearnley-Whittingstall’s TV work comprises over 20 cookery-based series, many of them award-winning. His Channel 4 River Cottage series, which documented his efforts to become a self-reliant farmer in rural England, led to the publication of his award-winning The River Cottage Cookbook (2001) and has been followed by thirteen more delicious volumes, including River Cottage Love Your Leftovers (2015), River Cottage Veg Everyday (2018) and, River Cottage Good Comfort (2022).
