Reviews: Sleep Tight, Disgusting Blob (26)

Creatures and ghosts and ghouls, oh my!

You should read this book if you are interested in all things creatures and bad guys! This book is about a mother blob putting her baby disgusting blob down to sleep, and telling it of all the evil creatures that must settle down and get ready for the night. There's a vampire brushing his fangs with no reflection in the mirror, and a giant spider in the bath having a before-bed shower. It's so imaginative and fun, and isn't scary for the little ones. Instead, it shows the scary creatures being gentle and snoozing away. A really great book by Huw Aaron.

Bedtime story with a difference...

A lovely and unusual bedtime story for young children.
It is full of wonderful illustrations of blobs, brains, demons, spiders, ghosts and many more...
They all clean their teeth, wash their faces and get tucked up for bed just like us.
So if you want something different this is the book to pick up!
Recommended.

A keeper

This is exactly the kind of picture book that a child will cherish growing up; one to keep with them through the years. My favourite picture books will always be the ones painted or drawn, and this has excellent pieces to accompany each character — and there are lots of iconic characters, here. The rhyming is original, and the story unique. Tim Burton would definitely endorse this.

How disgusting!

A very different bedtime picture book, and hats off to the author for being different!
There is every sort of creepy, unpleasant creature involved in the wonderful rhyming text.
The illustrations go well with the rhyme, and I can see it being a big hit

A beautiful, wonderful bedtime book

What a strange, but really loveable book, with a similar vibe to ‘Fungus, the Bogeyman’.
A mother Blob is trying to get her Disgusting little Blob child to get ready for bed, pointing out that:
“all creatures grim and evil,
under the tired sun,
are settling down –
and so must you, my horrible little one”
The illustrations are wonderful – almost every grim and evil creature you could think of – getting ready for bed, but drawn with smiley faces so you know they are not scary (just sleepy). My favourites were the Beastman counting sheep (as they jump into his mouth!), and the Mummy child having its blankets (and bandages) tucked in tight.
And to show that the mother Blob is calling her child horrible, disgusting, …. out of genuine affection, the book ends with:
“precious little one.
I love you, Disgusting Blob”
When children grow up they will, of course, have to learn that vampires don’t sleep when the sun goes down – but for now, let them slumber in ignorant bliss
I came across this book by serendipitous chance – and just had to buy it. I highly recommend it.

Being out the voices!

If ever a picture book inspired the reader to create a series of every more preposterous voices, this is it. I adored every page and highly recommend reading this to your eager audience in the most flamboyant way possible. Bravo!

Sleep Tight, Disgusting Blob

Do the little monsters in your house think stories of princesses and heroes are overrated? Then this is the bed-time book for you. Werewolf pups and baby draculas need deserve lullabies too, after all.

A beautiful rhyming bed-time story full of heart (and other gross things) for your sleepy little ones. I adore this.

So Blobby Good!

LOOOVE. This immediately drew me in with endearing little Blob on the front cover. It then dispelled any remaining apprehension, fear or prejudice I might have had against the stoic Frankenstein, the whimsical Phantom or the frightful Medusa. Coupled with fun, steady rhyming and vivid illustrations, this depicts all creatures grim and evil in a wonderful, affable light. A brilliant bedtime book for both kids and adults, or naptime otherwise!

A monstrous bedtime story full of humour and delight!

My three year old has to pre-approve every book we read by flipping through the pages and inspecting all the illustrations, so I was a little apprehensive if I’d even get a chance to read this with him as he’s sometimes a bit uncertain about monsters. Luckily the illustrations are so delightful they passed the test and we had an absolute laugh reading about the different ways monsters of all kinds get ready for bedtime. The text and illustrations work together beautifully to create a unique and charming story that’s bond to cause a laugh (but also not create too much of a disruption to ruin the bedtime mood)! A definite recommend.
