Reviews: The Devil in Amber (2)

The Devil in Amber

I loved the first Lucifer Box novel so finding out there was a second and third was a welcome surprise. This book keeps the devlish charm of "The Visuvius Club" while, thankfully, staying fresh and fast-paced. We meet Lucifer 20 years after the events of the first book and in so doing we see a man who seems to be of a dying breed. Nevertheless Box continues to be a source of great entertainment as we follow his exploits through the "film noir" feel of an Art deco-gripped New York of the 40s to the gritty and almost haunted coast of England, then the mysterious snowy landscape of the franco-swiss border. Its a spy adventure with a slightly more dark and gritty feel than its predecessor, but it works wonderfully. I can't wait to read the third book!

The Devil in Amber: Mark Gatiss

Mark Gatiss's creation, Lucifer Box, in his second novel did not dissapoint in the least. I had seen some less than favourable reviews but after reading the first book and enjoying it, I felt I should read this one. It has the same quick, dark whit as the first and the story is well paced. Plenty of twists to keep you gripped and, dear Lucifer, still has the unwielding charm as ever before. Great read, thanks Mark Gatiss, I shall now endeavour to make my set of books whole and purchase and read the third installment too!!
