Randall Munroe is an American author, cartoonist, engineer and scientific theorist. When his contract as a roboticist at NASA was not renewed Munroe began writing the webcomic xkcd, a project which soon became highly popular and financially lucrative. In 2014, Munroe produced What If?, a collection of answers to surreal and abstract questions posed to him by his fans on a blog of the same name. Thing Explainer, a heavily illustrated volume that elucidates concepts using only the thousand most common English words, followed a year later.
