Born in New Orleans, Michael Lewis studied art history at Princeton University and economics at the London School of Economics, after which he started a career on Wall Street. His journalism covers a wide range of topics from business and behavioural finance to political science, and he has written for the Spectator, the New York Times Magazine, the New Yorker, Bloomberg View, Slate and Vanity Fair, among others.
Lewis’ first book, Liar’s Poker (1989), was inspired by his work as a bond salesman. Fourteen years later it was followed by the bestselling Moneyball (2003) which examines baseball and success against all odds. His other bestsellers include the 2014 Flash Boys, an incisive investigation into the underworld of global finance; The Undoing Project (2017) on the creation of the field of behavioural economics; The Fifth Risk (2018) which explores Trump era America and what happens when democracy unravels; and The Premonition (2021) – a fascinating account of how a group of maverick scientists foretold the coronavirus pandemic.
