Gavin Pretor-Pinney

Pretor-Pinney attended Westminster School and the University of Oxford before going on to study at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. In 1993 he co-founded the bi-monthly magazine The Idler – a humorous periodical devoted to the topic of idling and work-as-play - with Tom Hodgkinson, and eleven years later set up the Cloud Appreciation Society. Clouds form the basis of his most famous literary work, from The Cloudspotter’s Guide to A Cloud A Day and Cloudspotting for Beginners which was shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year 2024. His other publications include The Wavewatcher’s Companion and The Ukelele Handbook.
