After studying English and Business at the University of Kent, Broad worked various jobs before learning of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme and made the life-changing decision to move to Sakata as an Assistant Language Teacher in 2012. Broad began making videos about his experiences in Japan as soon as he arrived under the name Abroad in Japan, and they rapidly became online sensations; so much so that in 2015 he left the programme and moved to Sendai to concentrate on producing Youtube content full-time. In 2023, Broad delivered a book of the same name as his vlog, which documented his life in and culture of Japan with wit and charm and was shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year 2023.
