Andy Weir was born and raised in California. He attended Livermore High School and began working as a computer programmer when he was fifteen years old.
With a long-standing fascination for physics, orbital mechanics and the history of manned spaceflight, Weir started writing science fiction in his twenties and self-published work on his website for years. His first novel The Martian (also initially self-published as a serial) engendered a publishing deal and came out in print in 2014. It was adapted into a film starring Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain in 2015. It was followed by Artemis in 2017. His third novel, Project Hail Mary (2020) focuses on a teacher and former biologist who wakes up on a spacecraft with no recollection of how he got there or who he is. It was nominated for the Hugo Awards Best Novel in 2022 and adapted into an eponymous feature film starring Ryan Gosling in 2026.
