Cornelia Funke biography and information
Cornelia Maria Funke is a multiple award-winning German author of children's fiction. She was born in Dorsten, North Rhine-Westphalia. Funke is best known for the Inkheart trilogy, and her work fits mainly into the fantasy and adventure genres. Funke has sold over 20 million copies of her books worldwide.
As a child, Funke wanted to become an astronaut and a pilot, but then decided to study pedagogy at the University of Hamburg. After finishing her studies, Funke worked for three years as a social worker. During the late 1980s, Funke established herself by writing two fantasy-oriented series' called Ghosthunters and Wild Chicks. Funke then proceeded to write The Thief Lord and Dragon Rider. Following the success of both, Inkheart was Funke's next card played on the fantasy fiction table, which became a trilogy as well as a movie. In 2010, Funke released the first book in her MirrorWorld series, Reckless.
Funke was voted into Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential people of 2005. In 2006, Funke was awarded the Sakura Medal by the International Students of Japan in the Chapter Book category for Dragon Rider.
