Funke is best known for the Inkheart trilogy, and her work fits mainly into the fantasy and adventure genres. Funke has sold over 20 million copies of her books worldwide.

As a child, Funke wanted to become an astronaut and a pilot, but then decided to study pedagogy at the University of Hamburg. After finishing her studies, Funke worked for three years as a social worker. During the late 1980s, Funke established herself by writing two fantasy-oriented series' called Ghosthunters and Wild Chicks. Funke then proceeded to write The Thief Lord and Dragon Rider.
