Double American Triumph for 2017’s CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals

Never before in their long, prestigious association have the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals both been simultaneously awarded to two American talents.

Ruta Sepetys – a sometime music manager, now novelist – devoted three years of research into what still remains the worst maritime disaster in history, the sinking of the German military transport ship the Wilhelm Gustloff in 1945. Some 9,400 lives were lost. Salt to the Sea picks up on four of those lives, a group of young people desperate to flee Germany by any means, even if this is a dangerously overcrowded vessel in a Baltic port. Sepetys’ account is personal and unflinching, a story of immense hope tragically dashed by violence.

"...when I began work on the novel years ago, I had no way of knowing that when it was published, we would be amidst a refugee crisis. Then and now, my thoughts return to the children. "

Ruta sepetys

Lane Smith, meanwhile – the talent behind the revolutionary The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales and the modern classic It’s a Book – brings what the New York Times saw as a ‘Chaplinesque charm, skillfully blending slapstick and melancholy’ to There is a Tribe of Kids, a typically witty and unexpected exploration of collective nouns. The emphasis here is on curiosity, discovery and togetherness, all the things that make childhood that most precious of times.

"Wildsmith, Blake, Browne, Steadman, Cousins, Oxenbury, Foreman and Burningham… to be acknowledged from the land of many of my favourite illustrators is an enormous honour."

Lane Smith

Both winners receive £500 of books to donate to their local library, a specially commissioned golden medal and a £5,000 cash prize from the Colin Mears Award. The CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals hold a very special place in the forward development and appreciation of children’s literature and we congratulate the judging panel on their continuing recognition of extraordinary talent.
