Refugee Week 2018

Launched in 1988, Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of events and activities that recognise the contribution of refugees to British society and the continuing importance of offering sanctuary to those in need. To mark Refugee Week, we’ve gathered together a range of reading that raises awareness of the experience of refugees, including thought-provoking true stories, original fiction and inspirational books for children.

In a landmark new collection, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Viet Thanh Nguyen, himself a refugee, brings together a host of prominent refugee writers to explore and illuminate the refugee experience. 10% of all worldwide sales of this collection will be going to the International Rescue Committee.

‘The stories are beautifully, and often angrily, told, and felt, and add up collectively to documentary proof of the possibilities – of empathy and humanity – that even the most brutal of welcomes can bring.’ – The Guardian

Exclusively for Waterstones this Refugee Week, read two pieces from the collection by British-based authors Dina Nayeri and Marina Lewycka.
