About the shows

The Royal Shakespeare Company brings Shakespeare's two great romantic comedies, Love's Labour's Lost and Love's Labour's Won (Much Ado About Nothing) to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre this winter. Paired together for the first time, they are set either side of the First World War and with the theatre transformed into the beautiful stately home of Charlecote Park.

Love's Labour's Lost before the war broke out, in a golden summer of English cricket matches and high tea and Love's Labour's Won (Much Ado About Nothing) in the post-war time of change, glamour and the onset of the Roaring 20s. Whether you're a fan of Shakespeare, costume drama or just enjoy great comedy, you'll fall in love with these two productions with period costumes and lavish set design.

RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran on Love's Labour's Won (Much Ado About Nothing):

Love's Labour's Won is apparently a lost Shakespeare play, but our contention is that it's not lost, it's just another play by another title. We think Love's Labour's Won is Much Ado About Nothing. If you think about the plots of those two plays, at the end of Love's Labour's Lost a sparring pair of lovers, Berowne and Rosaline, are separated. They do not come together at the end of the play as you expect them to do; you have a sense that they go off to war and off their separate ways. At the beginning of Much Ado About Nothing, the soldiers come back from war, and a pair of sparring lovers are reunited. So our idea, with Director Christopher Luscombe, is to put the two plays together and allow Berowne and Rosalind to morph into Beatrice and Benedick."
