William Goldman

‘Nobody knows anything,’ once observed novelist and screenwriter William Goldman, his phrase ultimately seeping into Hollywood vernacular as a true kernel of weary film-making wisdom. The talent behind the words of All the President’s Men and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, it was Goldman’s signature peek under the hood of the studio system Adventures in the Screen Trade that truly raised his profile to cult status. The author of a number of novels, Goldman – who passed away in 2018 – will perhaps be most fondly remembered for his 1973 adult fairy tale The Princess Bride, a book he later adapted into a latterly successful film.
