What is Read for Free?

Read for Free lets Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite (3G + Wi-Fi) and Kindle Touch (3G + Wi-Fi) customers download eligible books in any Waterstones bookshops in the UK (not including our European branches) and read them for free for up to one hour each day.

To use Read for Free, you must be connected to the Waterstones Wi-Fi network in any Waterstones store in the UK and and your device must be updated to the latest Kindle software.

A default payment method is not required to use Read for Free.

 

How to Read for Free

To find your nearest Waterstones bookshop, use our Bookshop Locator. Once you are connected to the Waterstones Wi-Fi network, visit the Kindle Store on your Kindle device. The Read for Free books will be listed in the Waterstones on Kindle section.

In order to Read for Free on your Kindle you must be connected to the Waterstones Wi-Fi network.

 

Connecting your Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Touch

  1. From the Home screen, tap Menu
  2. Tap Settings, then Wi-Fi Networks
  3. You'll see a list of detected Wi-Fi networks. You may have to wait a moment as your Kindle Paperwhite detects networks in range.
  4. The experimental browser will open and direct you to the Waterstones Wi-Fi landing page where you will need to enter your email address and name. Once you have done this you will not need to enter them again.
  5. You are now connected to the Waterstones Wi-Fi network.

 

Connecting your Kindle

  1. Press the Home button, then press the Menu button.
  2. Use the 5-way controller to navigate to and select "Settings".
  3. Select "view" next to "Wi-Fi Networks" to display a list of detected Wi-Fi networks. You may have to wait a moment as your Kindle detects networks in range. Kindle automatically scans for available Wi-Fi networks at periodic intervals. To rescan for available networks, select "rescan" using the 5-way controller at any time.
  4. Choose the Waterstones wi-fi network and select "connect".
  5. The experimental browser will open and direct you to the Waterstones Wi-Fi landing page where you will need to enter your email address and name. Once you have done this you will not need to enter them again.
  6. You are now connected to the Waterstones Wi-Fi network. 

 

Finding your Read for Free book

At the bottom of the screen you will see "Waterstones on Kindle". To view all the Read for Free titles select "See All". From here you can refine your search of titles in Read for Free. 

Once connected to the Waterstones Wi-Fi network, to browse the Read for Free titles open up the Kindle store on your Kindle.

The selected book will then appear on your Kindle home page. Note: You may need to "Sync and check for items". To do this navigate to "Settings -> Sync and Check for Items".

Once you have found a book you wish to read, navigate to the product page by selecting that book. Next to "Buy" will be a button labelled "Read for Free". Select this to download the whole book onto your Kindle.

Once the book has downloaded to your Kindle, select to open the book. You then have one hour of reading for free per day.

The book will remain on your Kindle for one hour, until you leave the store, or disconnect from the Waterstones Wi-Fi network. You can see the time remaining by tapping the top of the screen.

You will receive a prompt on your device when you have five minutes remaining and then when your time is up. From here you can buy a physical copy of the book in-store or buy a copy on your Kindle. In order to continue reading the book after the one hour period, you must buy the book or wait 24 hours to continue reading the book for free in a Waterstones store.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

I don't see Waterstones in the Kindle Store and none of the titles show Read for Free. What happened?

Ensure that you have the latest version of software for your Kindle. The software version on your Kindle needs to be the latest version in order to use Read for Free.

Also ensure that Aeroplane mode is off, and that you are connected to the network called Waterstones Wi-Fi.

Can I make highlights and annotations in a book that I'm reading for free?

Yes, you can. If you purchase the book on the same Kindle Paperwhite that you used to Read for Free, your notes, annotations, highlights, and last page read will all be available in your purchased copy of the book.

How many Read for Free books can I read during the one hour period?

You can choose to read multiple Read for Free books during the one hour period. Simply visit the Kindle Store and select another eligible Read for Free book on your Kindle. Your total free reading time per day is limited to one hour, no matter how many books that you have downloaded.

Are all Kindle titles available to Read for Free when I'm connected to the Waterstones Wi-Fi network?

Currently, only a selection of books is available to Read for Free. We are working to expand the selection.

When will other Kindle devices be eligible for Read for Free?

We are working on making more Kindle devices Read for Free eligible in the near future.
