Girl, Woman, Other & Me with Bernardine Evaristo

Tuesday 10th March 18:30 - 20:30 at Bristol - Galleries

Author, professor and literary activist Bernardine Evaristo, who made history in 2019 as the first Black British woman to win the Booker Prize for Girl, Woman, Other, will join Joy Francis, founder of Words of Colour Productions, for a live podcast.

They will discuss Girl Woman Other, which masterfully weaves an interconnected story featuring 12 characters of colour on their personal journeys through this country and the last 100 years, Bernardine’s colourful career, the role of visualisation and affirmations in her success, how she plans to top her historic win, and her specially curated book selection, to be featured in Waterstones for International Women’s Month 2020.

Bernardine is Anglo-Nigerian and the award-winning author of several books of fiction and verse fiction that explore aspects of the African diaspora: past, present, real, imagined. Her writing also spans short fiction, reviews, essays, drama and writing for BBC radio.

She  is Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University, London, and Vice Chair of the Royal Society of Literature. She was made an MBE in 2009. As a literary activist for inclusion, Bernardine has founded a number of successful initiatives, including Spread the Word writer development agency (1995-ongoing); the Complete Work mentoring scheme for poets of colour (2007-2017) and the Brunel International African Poetry Prize (2012-ongoing).

As well as the live podcast, Bernardine will take part in an audience Q&A and sign copies of the new paperback edition of Girl, Woman, Other.

Please note: Photography and/or filming will take place at the event.
