We Need New Stories: Nesrine Malik and Sarah Shaffi
Wednesday 9th October 2019
18:30 at Waterstones, London - Gower Street
Do women mistake access for arrival? Has the concept of political correctness been weaponised to avoid ceding space to those excluded from power? Is whiteness an identity with barriers to entry?
These are some of the questions at the centre of Nesrine Malik's radical and compelling new book, We Need New Stories. We are in a unique moment as it is becoming clear that the old frames of reference are not working, that the narratives used for decades to stave off progressive causes are in danger of being exposed as falsehoods.
Nesrine will be joined by journalist Sarah Shaffi, and they will challenge us to find new narrators whose stories can fill the void and unite us behind a shared progressive vision.
We are also inviting you to contribute your own stories, both on the night and all week instore leading up to the event. From Monday 30th September, we will have a dedicated pinboard on our ground floor (in History, by our lift) for you to pin up your stories, which Nesrine and Sarah will share on the night.
Tickets are priced at £10 / £8 students and Plus cardholders, or £20 including a discounted copy of We Need New Stories
