The Unsettling Story of Horror with Darryl Jones and Alice Slater

Tuesday 30th October 18:30 at London - Gower Street

Four o'clock in the morning, and the lights are on and still there's no way we're going to sleep, not after the film we just saw. The book we just read. Fear is one of the most primal human emotions, and one of the hardest to reason with and dispel. So why do we scare ourselves?

The week of Hallowe'en, What Page Are You On? podcast co-host and Mslexia columnist Alice Slater will discuss this and more with author Darryl Jones to celebrate the publication of his latest book: Sleeping With the Lights On: The Unsettling Story of Horror.

In it, Darryl delves into the darkest corners of this fascinating genre, exploring films, fiction, and plays to unlock the secrets of our hidden taboos and trace the evolution of our darkest fears.

Alice and Darryl will discuss the key tropes of the genre, including its monsters, its psychological chills, and its love affair with the macabre, and considers how horror often reflects contemporary anxieties and fears, and the way society responds to literary and film representations of the gruesome and taboo.
