The Story of Fenwick and its Family

Wednesday 9th October 2019
19:00 at Waterstones, Newcastle

Join us as we celebrate the launch of a very special book about a unique and much-loved family department store that has delighted the shoppers of Newcastle since its foundation, written by one of its former directors, and a key figure in the family, Christopher Fenwick.

The Fenwick Family firm was founded by John James Fenwick, known as Mr JJ Fenwick, in Newcastle in 1882, and in less than ten years he had also opened in London's Mayfair on the corner of New Bond Street and Brook Street. Born, one of eleven children to a tenant farmer family of North Yorkshire, he found an apprenticeship to a first-class master tailor on Teeside, who, on its completion, judged his skill and ambition enough to direct him to Newcastle, where he climbed the ladder of his profession to be the Buying Manager of its finest draper. With this basis, he formed his own business. How he did this and overcame the pitfalls is the root of this story.

This is the first published book about the Fenwick family and department store business. Join us, and Christopher, as he talks about this truly special book.
