The Joy Of Tricky Questions: An Evening With Alan Connor and Ashley Knowles

Thursday 17th May 19:30 at Brighton

The Joy of Tricky Questions
Why do we like being asked tricky questions? Whether it’s a quizmaster asking for factual information in a way that would have had us squirming at our desks in school or whether it’s the cryptic interrogation of a crossword setter who seems bent on twisting our brains to the point of insanity, our joyful response says much about the human condition and what it is that makes the human intellect special, and hints at the nature of knowledge, creativity and humour.
Alan Connor, well known among quiz aficionados as one of the question editors for BBC2’s Only Connect, Richard Osman’s House of Games and Have I Got News for You, the author of The Joy of Quiz and Two Girls, One on Each Knee (about the puzzling, playful world of the crossword) and a crossword columnist for the Guardian, discusses these and related questions with Ashley Knowles, better known to Guardian readers as Boatman, one of Britain’s most challenging and innovative compilers of cryptic crosswords and the author of Boatman – the First 50, a collection of his fiendish and inimitable crosswords, telling the story behind the creation of each puzzle.
Book Lovers’ Quiz
You can experience their distinctive approach to quizzing for yourself as Alan and Ashley present a quiz for book lovers, crammed with fun questions about books & authors and a sprinkling of not-too-fiendish wordplay.
