The Debut Fiction Showcase is a brand new quarterly event celebrating some of the best and brightest new literary talent, handpicked by our expert booksellers at Waterstones Gower Street.
Join us on October 19th for gin, canapés and literary merriment as our compere, Gower Street’s Elizabeth Morris, introduces some of the finest new fiction publishing this Autumn: We Are The End by Gonzalo C. Garcia, My Cat Yugoslavia by Pajtim Statovici and So Happy It Hurts by Anneliese Mackintosh.
About the Books:
Gonzalo C. Garcia’s We Are The End is about a games designer whose life falls apart when his girlfriend goes off to Antarctica, leaving him in Santiago. With its Chilean setting, fresh themes and perspectives - and its willingness to play with form- this is is unique debut which gives voice to the Millenial Generation.
My Cat Yugoslavia by Pajtim Statovci is a surreal tale of fractured identity and lives lived at the margin, shot through with an icy wit. It tells of a young man who meets a talking cat in a Helskini Gay bar. This witty, charming, manipulative creature starts him on a journey back to Kosovo to confront his demons and make sense of the magical, cruel, incredible history of his family.
So Happy It Hurts is Green Carnation Prize winning author Anneliese Mackintosh’s debut novel. Told through a scrapbook of letters, receipts and emails, this funny, generous novel tells the story of 30-year-old Ottila McGregor’s Macgregor’s struggle to quit alcohol, recover from her father’s death, support her mentally ill sister and form a relationship which isn’t totally self-destructive.
