The Brighton Literary Salon: An Evening With Dr Ian Williams

Come along to our first literary salon of 2019, which will see author and GP Dr Ian Williams share his latest graphic novel, The Lady Doctor. Ian Williams explores current medical issues and ethics – and attitudes to drugs – with his trademark lightness of touch and wonderfully sly sense of humour, using his own experience as a practising GP to recreate the lives of both patients and health service practitioners.

Ian will be interviewed by Corinne Pearlman, Myriad’s Creative Director and curator of the Myriad graphic novel list. Those attending will be given a chance to ask Ian questions about writing, drawing and how he has managed to be an established graphic novelist and part-time GP, as well as co-founding the Graphic Medicine movement putting comics and health on the page. (This summer Brighton hosts a return of the annual Graphic Medicine conference 11-13 July).

The evening will throw a spotlight on new writing, allowing for three readings (or artwork unveiling) by emerging Brighton authors/graphic novelists. Said work will be critiqued by attending authors and publishers – a fabulous way to gain first-hand access to those in the industry and receive productive feedback for work-in-progress. Also featuring at the event will be Brighton Women’s Centre. They will have a stall to showcase the brilliant work they’re doing to support women around Brighton, and will share news of their upcoming creative writing workshops.

The event compere will be the wonderful Lizzie Enfield, author of Living With It (Myriad, 2014) and columnist for Viva Brighton.

TICKETS: Tickets for this event are £4, which can be redeemed off the price of The Lady Doctor. There will be free cake and the Waterstones cafe will be open late so you can grab a cuppa to go with it.
