Talk: The Science of Conversation

Elizabeth Stokoe, social psychologist and Professor of Social Interaction at Loughborough University joins us to discuss the revelations of her new book, Talk: The Science of Conversation, at this very special launch event. She will be talking to Dr Jon Sutton, editor of the British Psychology Society's magazine, The Psychologist,(http://thepsychologist.bps.org.uk)

Talk: The Science of Conversation, reveals how everyday we are pushed and pulled around by language, far more than we realise, and how we are seduced by the myths and stereotypes about communication. The author presents her research and findings from over twenty years collecting and analysing real conversations, from settings as varied as first dates, crisis negotiation, sales encounters and medical consultations, and compares to the work of other conversation analysts all over the world.

Through numerous examples the book shows how many pre-conceptions about conversation and spoken communication are flawed, or wrong, but it also uncovers fresh insights about how to have better conversations using the experience of decades of research.
