Reading and Resistance: James Miller, Tony White and Jeremy Gavron in conversation with Max Liu

Following a year of passionate debate at 2017’s United States of Resistance salons, we’re delighted to launch Reading and Resistance – a new series of salons at which writers and readers will discuss the relationship between literature and politics in the work of authors from all over the world.

On March 7, James Miller (UnAmerican Activities), Jeremy Gavron (Felix Culpa) and Tony White (The Fountain in the Forest) – three boldly experimental writers, pushing the boundaries of narrative form – will join journalist Max Liu to discuss how they tackle the burning political issues of our times in their new books and, more generally, the role that writers can play in resisting power today.

In the spirit of a true literary salon, there will be an opportunity for audience members to take part in our discussion – we encourage both questions and opinions, so do come armed with both! The event will be followed by a book signing.

Drinks will be served from 6pm.

More About the Books

James Miller’s UnAmerican Activities explores the conspiracy theories and violence of modern America through a series of interlocking stories told by deranged and desperate narrators. Populated by meth addicts, vampire hunters, porn stars, fanatical evangelists, disgraced academics and zombified hipsters, this is a crazy homage to American pop culture and an unforgettable road trip through the dark heart of the United States.

The Fountain in the Forest by Tony White transforms the traditional crime narrative into something dizzyingly unique. At once an avant-garde linguistic experiment, thrilling police procedural, philosophical meditation on liberty, and counter-culture bildungsroman, this is an iconoclastic novel of unparalleled ambition.

In Felix Culpa, Jeremy Gavron conjures up a work of extraordinary literary alchemy: a novel made out of lines taken from a hundred great works of literature. Magical and moving, Felix Culpa, it asks what happens when we lose the narrative of our own life, and fall into someone else’s.

All tickets include a glass of wine and a 15% discount on copies of the above titles purchased on the night. BUY ONLINE, IN STORE OR BY PHONING 020 7636 1577.
