PATRICK WRIGHT on The Sea View has me Again, Uwe Johnson.
Wednesday 9th March 2022
18:30 at Waterstones, Canterbury - Rose Lane
Wright's The Sea View has me Again is the story of one of Germany's greatest post-war writers, Uwe Johnson. Lauded by Gunter Grass, Johnson relinquished the literary scene of his home country for the Isle of Sheppey, where he wrote the epic Anniversaries, recently republished by the New York Review of Books. Wright interweaves his biographical investigation with memories of his own student days in Canterbury, making for a unique reading journey.
The Sea View has me Again was a TLS and New Statesman Book of the Year.
Jonathan Meades wonderfully called it 'a hymn to estuarial peculiarity', (something many of us Kentish folk have experienced).
