Olivia Laing - The Lonely City (Hosted by Dave Haslam)
Tuesday 19th April 19:00 at Manchester - Deansgate
You can be lonely anywhere, but there is a particular flavour to the loneliness that comes from living in a city, surrounded by thousands of strangers. When Olivia Laing moved to New York City in her mid-thirties, she found herself inhabiting loneliness on a daily basis. She began to explore the lonely city by way of art. From those explorations came her new book, 'The Lonely City'.
At this special event at Waterstones Deansgate, Olivia Laing will read from the book and, in a Q&A hosted by DJ/writer Dave Haslam, discuss how the lives of artists, and their works - from Edward Hopper's Nighthawks to David Wojnarowicz's AIDS activism - reveal, address, or redress the lonely city.
Olivia Laing and Dave Haslam will discuss other themes of the book too. The distinction between being alone and being lonely. How do we connect with other people? What are the causes of loneliness and how might it be resisted and redeemed?
