New Writing North with Waterstones Newcastle Present: Jo Clement

Wednesday 18th March 19:00 at Newcastle

Join us for the launch of Moveable Type, poet Jo Clement’s debut pamphlet, which draws on the rich heritage of her working-class Gypsy upbringing and marks an exciting new voice in contemporary poetry.

Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria is the largest annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers in Europe. Jo Clement visited the fair each year with her Grandad Jack as a child. In this moving homecoming the poet travels alone to the fair to watch horses be bathed in the River Eden and raced along the electrifying flashing lane, to reflect on the poetics and politics of Gypsy identity.

Jo Clement is Managing Editor of Butcher’s Dog poetry magazine and a New Writing North ‘Northern Promise’ award-winner. She was born in Darlington and holds a PhD from Newcastle University.
