SOLD OUT Love Letters to Michelle Obama
Tuesday 13th November 2018
18:30 at Waterstones, London - Gower Street
"When we share our stories, we are reminded of the humanity in each other"—Michelle Obama
We are so excited about Michelle Obama’s highly-anticipated memoir Becoming, we are hosting a very special event in her absence.
Paula Akpan and Nicole Crentsil from Black Girl Fest will compère a line-up of authors, activists and poets who will each recite their own love letter to the former-FLOTUS. Becoming will be one of most iconic and compelling life stories of our era, in which Michelle Obama will “talk about my roots and how a little girl from the South Side of Chicago found her voice”.
The following speakers will take part, with more to be announced nearer the time:
- Zing Tsjeng, Broadly editor and author of the Forgotten Women series
- Viv Groskop, who wrote about Michelle’s prowess in public speaking in her latest book How to Own the Room
- Marianne Tatepo, writer and editor
Bring your own love letter for a chance to win an exclusive signed copy!
We want you to write your own letter to Michelle – you can submit this on arrival and our line-up of speakers of contributors will randomly select letters to be read out on the night. Our speakers will decide the winning letter, and its writer will win a copy of Becoming signed by Michelle Obama herself!
You can write about how she inspires you, what you miss about her being in the White House, how you hope to emulate her – or simply how much you loved her Carpool Karaoke. It’s totally up to you.
Michelle Obama recently described Becoming as being “about the ordinariness of a very extraordinary story… When we share our stories, we are reminded of the humanity in each other. And when we take the time to understand each other’s stories, we become more forgiving, more empathetic, and more inclusive.”
So come along, share your stories and your gratitude to Michelle Obama, and let’s all celebrate one of the most powerful advocates for women and girls around the world.
