Found in Translation: Art or Alcemi?

Join us for a rare chance to hear and discuss how words and meaning change from one language into another.
Gwen Davies is the English translator of the modern Welsh classic Martha, Jac a Sianco. She is currently working as an editor on This Room is Impossible to Eat, a first novel from Slovakian. Eluned Gramich has translated Monique Schwitter's stories Goldfish Memory from German, the language of her father, to English, the language she learned in school. Her mother tongue is Welsh. She has also translated her own experience of learning Japanese as a young woman living in Japan into the award-winning memoir Woman Who Brings the Rain and she then married a Brazilian. Emyr Humphreys has translated the iconic 70s counterculture novel Y Dydd Olaf by the language activist and physicist Owain Owain into English for the first time as The Last Day. He also translates from Portuguese into English and is working with several Brazilian writers to bring their work into English.
Join us to cross continents and discuss words and their meaning in English, Welsh, Japanese, German, Slovakian, Portuguese or any other you might like to bring along.

The evening will consist of a fascinating panel discussion, with time for Q&A and signing. Tickets are £5, with a concessionary rate of £3 for Waterstones Plus Card Holders! Refreshments will be provided.

Darganfuwyd mewn Cyfieithiad: Celf neu Alcemi?
Ymunwch â ni am gyfle prin i glywed a thrafod y ffyrdd y mae geiriau ac ystyrion yn newid o un iaith i’r llall.
Cyfieithydd y clasur Cymreig modern Martha, Jac a Sianco i Saesneg yw Gwen Davies.  Mae hi ar hyn o bryd yn golygu This Room is Impossible to Eat, sef ein nofel gyntaf o Slofacia. Mae Eluned Gramich wedi cyfieithu casgliad o straeon gan Monique Schwitter o’r enw Goldfish Memory o Almaeneg, sef iaith ei thad, i Saesneg, sef yr iaith a ddysgodd tra yn yr ysgol. Cymraeg yw ei mamiaith. Mae hi hefyd wedi cyfieithu ei phrofiad o ddysgu Japaneeg fel menyw ifanc yn byw yn Japan yn yr hunangofiant arobryn Woman Who Brings the Rain, ac yna priododd ddyn o Frasil. Mae Emyr Wallace Humphreys wedi cyfieithu nofel wrth-ddiwylliannol eiconig y 70au, sef Y Dydd Olaf gan yr ymgyrchydd iaith a gwyddonydd Owain Owain i Saesneg am y tro cyntaf fel The Last Day. Mae hefyd yn cyfieithu o Bortiwgaleg i Saesneg ac yn gweithio â sawl awdur o Frasil i ddod â'u gwaith i Saesneg.
Ymunwch â ni i groesi cyfandiroedd a thrafod geiriau a'u hystyrion yn Saesneg, Cymraeg, Japaneaidd, Almaeneg, Slofacaidd, Portiwgaleg neu unrhyw un arall yr hoffech ddod gyda chi.
