Forgotten Fiction #7: Brief Encounter
Tuesday 23rd January 2018
18:30 at
Waterstones, London - Gower Street

Forgotten Fiction is a monthly bookclub where we travel back in time to rediscover 'lost' literary gems of the 20th Century. Each session is curated around a specific theme and features two books carefully chosen to provide the basis for our discussion. You can choose to read one/both/neither of the books OR you can search out your own 20th Century gem that fits the theme & bring it along to share with the group.
Our first journey of 2018 takes place on January 23rd when we explore the theme 'Brief Encounter'. Henri Alain-Fournier's only novel 'The Lost Estate' was published in 1913 and tells the story of the enigmatic 'Le Grand Meaulnes'. When he disappears from boarding school for several days & returns with tales of a strange party at a mysterious house & the beautiful girl who lives there, his life is changed forever. Combining a fairytale-like narrative with a poignant story of vanished youth, obsession & lost love this is a timeless classic. The events of Brigid Brophy's 1964 novel 'The Snow Ball' take place in London at a masked 18th Century costume ball on New Year's Eve. Illicit kisses at midnight, masked Dons & the unforgettable Anna K obsessed with Mozart, sex & death all combine in this deliciously extravagant, brilliantly bonkers & utterly unique novel.
Our brand of discussion at Waterstones is always light-hearted, informal & strictly non-academic. Our journey will be fuelled by vintage tunes and literary-inspired gin cocktails served in jam jars.
Numbers strictly limited, please book promptly to avoid disappointment. Tickets are £6/4 (students) and include gin cocktails. Book online, in store or by phoning 020 7636 1577.
