Forgotten Fiction #4: Leaving Home
Wednesday 27th September 18:30 at London - Gower Street
Forgotten Fiction is a new monthly reading group where we will go in search of lost literary gems from the 20th Century. Each session will be curated around a specific theme and will feature two novels carefully chosen to provide the basis for our discussion. You can choose to read one/both/neither of the books OR you can hunt out your own literary treasure and bring it along to share with the group.
On 27th September, to coincide with Fresher's Week, we will discuss the theme 'Leaving Home' featuring two exceptional debuts from the 1940's. Our first chosen novel is Clarice Lispector's 'Near to the Wild Heart' which was published in 1943 when she was just 23 years old. Told in a series of dreamlike vignettes it is a fiercely intelligent, beautifully observed portrait of a young girl, from her creative childhood through to her decision to make her own way into the world. We will also discuss Truman Capote's sensational novel 'Other Voices, Other Rooms'. First published in 1948 it tells the story of Joel Knox who, after the death of his mother, is summoned to a vast, decaying mansion full of secrets in rural Alabama. Capote vividly captures the Gothic landscape of the Deep South and brilliantly depicts a young boy's first glimpse into the mysterious adult world.
As always, our brand of discussion is light-hearted, informal & non-academic. Our journey will be fueled by literary-inspired gin cocktails served in jam jars.
