Dying Matters Week Special: A panel discussion with Dr. Kathryn Mannix and Guests

Writer, campaigner and former palliative care doctor Kathryn Mannix will be joined by two leading Canadian palliative care specialists to discuss the need for broader conversations around death and dying on Saturday 11th May as part of Dying Matters Week 2024.
Organised in collaboration with St Christopher’s Centre for Awareness and Response to End of Life (CARE), Waterstones and Hospice UK, the event will take place at Waterstones Gower Street in central London and is open to the public and professionals.
Join Kathryn and her guests to ponder how we might improve public understanding of dying, encourage better planning ahead, and incorporate palliative care far earlier in long-term illnesses. The panel hopes for an enthusiastic audience of the public as well as healthcare colleagues, and there will be ample time for audience questions and discussion.
Dr Sammy Winemaker and Dr Hsien Seow are visiting the UK following the publication of their book Hope for the Best, Plan for the Rest which explores patient empowerment and better conversations about serious, long-term or progressive conditions.

Dr Kathryn Mannix said: “This is a book you’ll want your patients, their families and your medical colleagues to read. It’s changing the conversation about serious illness. Come and find out why.”

Dr Sammy Winemaker said: “The discussion will activate patients, families, and providers about how to live fully, and have more hope and control, even in the face of a life-changing diagnosis.”
This year’s Dying Matters Week runs from Monday 6th May to Sunday 12th May. Its theme is ‘the way we talk about dying matters,’ and it echoes a recent call by the Health and Social Care Committee for the government to implement a “national strategy for death literacy”.
The Panel:
Dr Kathryn Mannix is a former palliative care consultant who worked with patients in hospices, hospitals and in their own homes. Using her experience as a physician, psychotherapist, trainer and service lead, Kathryn presents stories that illustrate how we can better understand and prepare for death (our own or somebody else’s) in her bestseller With The End In Mind, and then leads us through the art of Tender Conversations in her latest book, Listen.
Dr. Hsien Seow, PhD is the Canada Research Chair in Palliative Care and Health System Innovation and a Professor in the Department of Oncology, McMaster University.
Dr Samantha Winemaker, MD is a palliative care physician, and an Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Family Medicine, in the Division of Palliative Care at McMaster University. She teaches palliative care to health care professionals. Dr Seow and Dr Winemaker cohost the ‘Waiting Room Revolution’ website and podcast. Their book, Hope for the Best, Plan for the Rest: 7 Keys for Navigating a Life-Changing Diagnosis is published by Page Two and is on sale now.
