BookFest: Fictional Fantasy Fans Unite
Wednesday 16th August 2023
15:00 at Waterstones, London - Piccadilly
We’re absolutely thrilled to host a panel of perfection with fantasy authors A.Y. Chao, Hannah Kaner and Sabaa Tahir as they discuss their most recent publications and how they have created the fictional fantasy lands that we love so much. The event will be chaired by Laura Sebastian.
A.Y. Chao’s Shanghai Immortal brims with passion, fury and unforgettable characters. This richly imaginative debut whisks the reader into an alternative jazz-age Shanghai where gods and monsters rollick with humble mortals. Alice is a Chinese Canadian author of fantasy. She’s fascinated by the interplay between self-perceived versus imposed identity and how this intersects with belonging and enjoys exploring these spaces in her stories. A recovering lawyer and xiaolongbao enthusiast, she knits to soothe anxiety and has a deep abiding love for Hobonichi planners and kawaii planner stickers. She is grateful for the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
Hannah Kaner’s breathtaking debut Godkiller features a slayer of gods and a disillusioned knight who must join forces in a perilous quest to defeat an indestructible deity. Hannah Kaner is a Northumbrian writer living in Scotland. She works as a senior digital consultant in Edinburgh, delivering digital healthcare, tools, and services for the public sector. She has a first class degree in English from Pembroke College, Cambridge, and a Masters of Science with distinction from the University of Edinburgh. She is inspired by world mythologies, angry women, speculative fiction, and the stories we tell ourselves about being human.
Sabaa Tahir’s A Sky Beyond the Storm is the jaw-dropping finale in the beloved New York Times bestselling An Ember in the Ashes fantasy series where we discover who will survive the storm. Sabaa Tahir grew up in California’s Mojave Desert at her family’s eighteen-room motel. There, she spent her time devouring fantasy novels, raiding her brother’s comic book stash, and playing guitar badly. She began writing An Ember in the Ashes while working nights as a newspaper editor. She likes thunderous indie rock, garish socks, and all things nerd. Sabaa currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her family.
