It is a great honour to welcome the distinguished Middle East novelist Raja Alem to Waterstones Piccadilly on publication of The Dove’s Necklace, the book that made Raja the first woman to win the International Prize for Arabic Fiction in 2011, and is now translated into English for the first time.
When a dead woman is discovered in Abu Al Roos, one of Mecca's many alleys, no one will claim the body because they are ashamed by her nakedness. The case is taken up by the resolute Detective Nasser, and as we follow his investigation of the case, the secret life of the holy city of Mecca is revealed.
Raja Alem’s writing always tackles powerful issues; here an ambitious portrait of a changing city, exploring the disappearing world of Mecca from the unique perspective of a female Saudi author.
Join Raja in conversation with literary critic Alex Clark for what promises to be a fascinating evening of discussion.
Tickets are free, but please RSVP by telephone 020 7851 2400 or email [email protected]
