An Evening with Laura Purcell
Monday 1st October 19:00 - 20:00 at Colchester - High Street
We are delighted to welcome back award-winning, Colchester author Laura Purcell to talk about her new Gothic mystery, The Corset. Laura's The Silent Companions has attracted wide spread praise & has been part of the Zoe Ball Book Club. The Corset has a Victorian setting too. Teenage seamstress Ruth is in prison awaiting trial for murder & claims that her crimes are the result of a supernatural power in her stitches. She is visited by the rich Dorothea, who is using her charitable work to pursue a fascination with phrenology, the theory that the shape of person's skull can indicate their criminal inclination. The story that Ruth has to tell of her deadly creations - of bitterness & betrayal, of death & dresses - will shake Dorothea's belief in rationality & the power of redemption. Can what Ruth says be trusted? Is she just mad or is she indeed a murderer? Elizabeth Haynes says, "an intriguing premise deftly excuted, The Corset is genuinely thrilling".
Tickets are just £2 including complimentary wine & nibbles. Doors will open at 6.30pm for 7pm start.
