An Evening with Dan Vyleta
Friday 8th July 19:00 at Nottingham
The world of Smoke is an alternate history of Victorian England. In Dan Vyleta's extraordinary vision, Smoke rises from everybody, leaving soot on your clothes and ash in your hair; but the Smoke is a representation of the sin and evil within. In this world, evil thoughts, past crimes, sins and transgressions cannot be hidden, the swarm and coil around the bearers as Smoke. The rulers of this society are the ones who have learned to control the appearance of the Smoke, in order to appear moral, pure, spotlessly untainted by sin.
Fans of Justin Cronin and Philip Pullman will revel in the mastery of Vyleta's world-building, but it's the prose that steals the show, flowing almost like the Smoke itself, poetic, yet disjointed, a real exploration of narrative in a highly original setting.
Come and meet the author as he discusses this masterful new novel. Tickets are free but places must be registered, call the shop and speak to a bookseller for more information.
