An Evening With Angie Thomas

Monday 10th April 18:30 at Manchester - Deansgate

Join us for a very special evening with Angie Thomas – author of The Hate U Give, her debut book inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement in the USA. The book tells the story of 16 year old Starr, whose life is turned upside down when she is the only witness to the shooting of her unarmed friend Khalil by a white police officer. Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this is a powerful and gripping YA novel about one girl's struggle for justice.

The book is already out in the USA and has had a huge amount of buzz, receiving eight starred reviews and topping the New York Times Bestseller list. It’s tipped to be one of the biggest books of the year. Movie rights have been sold to Fox 2000, with Amanda Stenberg (Rue in The Hunger Games) to star.

Angie will be in the UK for an exclusive trip to promote the book and will appear in Manchester to discuss her path to publication, from the rough neighbourhood in Mississippi where she was raised, to book and movie deals, the real life inspirations behind the story, and the positive messages she wants to pass on to the next generation to ensure they use their voices to enact change.

Angie will be in conversation with Khalil West, a writer and cultural activist based in Manchester, originally from Jersey City, NJ.

The event is free, but please register your interest by emailing events.manchester@waterstones.com, or tweeting us @waterstonesmcr.
