An Afternoon with Markus Zusak

Monday 3rd June 2019
13:00 at Waterstones, Birmingham

Join us for an afternoon with Markus Zusak, the bestselling author of six novels, including The Book Thief. We'll be celebrating the paperback release of his latest novel Bridge of Clay.

Bridge of Clay is a stunningly ambitious and epic family tale, lovingly narrated by the eldest of five sons. It is a hymn to literature itself, and a story about finding beauty in grit and determination
against the greatest odds.

The five Dunbar brothers are living – fighting, dreaming, loving – in the perfect squalor of a house without grown-ups. Today, the father who abandoned them is about to walk back in.

But why has he returned, and who have the boys become since he left?
At the helm is Matthew, cynical, poetic; Rory, forever truanting; Henry, the money-spinner; and young Tommy, the pet collector who has colonized the house with dysfunctional pets, including Achilles the mule and Rosy the Border collie.

And then there’s Clay, the quiet one, his whole young life haunted by an unspeakable act.

From the tale of their grandfather, whose passion for the ancient Greeks still colours their lives, to the mother and father who met over a mislaid piano, to the present day, where five sons dwell in a house with no rules, BRIDGE OF CLAY is an epic portrait of a ramshackle family and the unburying of one boy’s tragic secret.

‘If The Book Thief was a novel that allowed Death to steal the show... [its] brilliantly illuminated follow-up is
affirmatively full of life.’ The Guardian

‘A sweeping reflection on love and loss etched in vibrant writing, vivid characterisations and heartfelt emotion . . .
A book to lose yourself in on long autumn nights’ Charlotte Heathcote, Sunday Express

‘A tale of love, art and redemption; rowdy and joyous’ The Times

‘Give it your time and you’ll be repaid with a moving and epic read.’ Stylist

‘Unusual, boisterous and playful’ Good Housekeeping
