The British Book Awards 2020 Winners
It is with enormous pleasure that we present the winners of the British Book Awards – or Nibbies – led by Candice Carty-Williams’s dazzling novel Queenie which scooped both the coveted Book of the Year award as well as Debut Book of the Year.
Queenie faced stiff competition for the accolade, from both the Booker-winning Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo – who also double-triumphed as the winner of the Fiction Book of the Year and the Author of the Year – and Lisa Taddeo’s international bestseller Three Women, which scooped the Non-Fiction Narrative Book of the Year Award.
‘This is a novel of our time, filled with wit, wisdom and urgency; and unafraid to tackle life as it is being experienced by a young, single black woman in the city. This shouldn’t be filed away as simply a funny debut by a brilliant writer (though it is that); this is an important meditation on friendship, love and race.’
STIG ABELL, BOOK OF THE YEAR JUDGE AND EDITOR OF THE TLS
