The story is about Sammy, a lonely individual, whose only real friend disappears; he then loses the dog who was devoted to them both. Trailing the little animal, Sammy leaves his safe, though unhappy home to search out his old friend. After a terrifying and mysterious experience, he discovers a strange new world where many of life's problems have been solved, but where others remain and become Sammy's too. He makes some faithful friends, such as Charlie and Celesta, and older ones like Councillor Hastings and the old professor, but he meets enemies too, including Colonel Spragat who is determined to kill him. There is excitement, sadness and terror, but fun and joy too. Though the story has strange and secretive aspects, clues give the reader the opportunity to help solve its mysteries. There is food for thought, concerning our environment and our future, but as the subtitle promises, it is an adventure of suspense, mystery and fear.
