It is estimated about 200 million people worldwide (or five per cent of the world's population aged 15-64 years) used illicit drugs during the last 12 months, including cannabis, opiates such as heroin, cocaine, and amphetamine-type stimulants including ecstasy; whilst the the global retail market for illicit drugs is estimated at about US$320 billion. This annual publication by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) assesses the current situation relating to international illicit drugs. The first volume sets out a detailed analysis of trends in the markets for opium/heroin, coca/cocaine, cannabis and amphetamine-type stimulants; as well as containing chapters on: estimating the value of illicit drug markets, HIV/AIDS and drugs, and work towards creating an illicit drug index. The second volume contains detailed statistics on drug production, seizures, prices and consumption.
