Being able to effectively communicate using maps, charts, and symbols is an integral part of any military operation. The display of military symbology has evolved from a static, manual operation to include fully automated computer generation. This evolution has resulted in the fielding of many different symbology implementations to meet the requirements of the specific missions. The system contained in "U.S. Department of Defense Handbook of Military Symbols" (MIL-STD-2525C) is designed to eliminate conflicts within various symbol sets and to establish a core set of common symbology under one Department of Defense standard. This standardization is essential during joint service operations. While the primary focus of this standardization is the electronic generation of symbols, it also supports those mission requirements where symbology must be hand drawn.
