This special issue focuses on itraconazole, a promising new treatment for serious fungal infections. Studies on itraconazole for systemic fungal infections are presented in papers from the USA, Italy, the Netherlands, and South Africa as well as in abstracts from other countries. The unique pharmacokinetic properties of the drug are shown as well as its affect on AIDS patients, and its efficacy in various fungal infections. The clinical trials indicate that itraconazole represents a significant step forward in antifungal therapy, with oral therapy of invasive aspergillosis being a particularly important advance. The introduction in the near future of intravenous itraconazole will allow the full potential of the drug to be realized.
