This is a highly ambitious critical examination of the place of tourism within our globalised society. The book will examine tourism in terms of many key debates in contemporary radical sociology, with regard to globalisation, risk, ethnicity, gender and sexuality, amongst other areas. It explores the role of tourism as part of both economic and cultural globalisation. Many states look to tourism to find a foothold in the global economy, and the unrestrained spread of tourism is encouraged by the neoliberal model of capitalism. But the practice of tourism can increase inequality rather than reduce it, and can lead to widespread environmental degradation. The authors follow Zygmunt Bauman in seeing the gulf between the empowered and powerless in the world in terms of mobility and immobility, and relate this directly to the mobility of tourists whilst those who serve tourists are often immobile.
