In the time of readjustment after his wife died, the author took the opportunity to look back on their fifty years together and recognise God's hand in the weathering effect of shared marital turbulence and peace. He and his wife Molly had always entrusted their growing family to the care and guidance of Mary, Mother of God, that she would lead them to her Son. She did - and does still. Time and again her influence in their marriage stuck out a mile. He realised his response to this motherly concern had to be tough and personal, a cycling pilgrimage from Dorset to her shrine in Walsingham, destroyed by 'the fat Welsh king' in a fit of pique but, since the 1930s, restored to its rightful place as a very English honour to the Lady whose dowry England is, and now a focus of mutual love between Anglicans and Catholics. So it was that a year after his wife's death he set out on that painful and happy journey, of which this is a brief account.
