Six local authorities began a three-year initiative in 1984/5 to improve the quality of design in the environment, to increase public awareness and appreciation of the importance of good design and to improve the operation of the planning system and the development process. Although no set brief was given to the six authorities, initiatives fell broadly under the categories of: awards and competitions; design guidance; seminars and lectures; environmental education; design and tender procedures. The Time for Design experiment was monitored throughout and this is the final report which provides some interesting insights for future initiatives.
