The application of ceramic materials is expanding into a wide range of areas, such as, gas turbine assembly, engine components, electronic devices and bio-materials. However, ceramics pose problems with respect to their brittleness and low reliability, due to their insintric nature and/or processing defects, research related to the deformation and fracture of ceramics is a subject of high priority. The time-dependent mechanical response of engineering ceramics has been studied for a long time. Long-term responses include mantle convection of the order of 106 years, creep deformation of the order of months to hours, and slow crack growth of the order of seconds. Thses studies have always been carried out by researchers in their own individual field:for example, shock wave, dynamic and/or static fracture, machining, high-temperature creep or geology. This symposium brought all those researchers together. This book comprises 26 papers which cover recent developments and trends in the current research in the field of time-dependent deformation and fracture of ceramics.
