The indications, benefits and risks of surgical treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) have been scrutinized recently and interest in the development of alternative, less invasive approaches has emerged. Thermal treatment in particular has attracted attention in the last year but is still under evaluation and remains controversial. Nevertheless, the results of studies conducted by several pioneering centres have shown clinical improvements, with the alleviation of irritative symptoms, in 50 to 70% of the patients involved. This publication addresses various aspects of new technological approaches and presents the most recent data on transurethral thermotherapy with microwave or radiofrequency.
