Philippa Gregory is best known for her distinctive first-person historical narratives set around the Tudor period of British monarchy.
She published her first novel, Wideacre, in 1987 - the book was written whilst Gregory studied for a PhD in 18th century history and literature.
Two of Gregory's best-loved novels are Earthly Joys and Virgin Earth, based on the true-life story of father and son John Tradescant, pioneered the genre which has become her own: "Fictional Biography".
This new style is epitomised by The Other Boleyn Girl, which stormed the US market (with more than a million copies in print) and then went worldwide - telling the story of the little-known sister to Anne Boleyn.
The Other Boleyn Girl was made into a TV drama, and a major film starring Scarlett Johansson as Mary Boleyn, Natalie Portman as Anne Boleyn and Eric Bana as Henry VIII.
