The basic aim was the training of young lads. H.M.S. Conway was the officers' training ship and lay a little south of Rock Ferry pier. The Akbar, a protestant reformatory vessel, sat between Eastham and Rock Ferry. Next in line was the Indefatigable, an old sailing frigate, housing orphaned sons of seamen of good standing. Life was really tough, but the great hardships of the reformatory ships were better than the streets of Liverpool. Bob Evans is again firmly part of this history, the history of Liverpool seafaring.
