After decades of debate, this book is a resolution of the issue of "underachievement of children of African-Caribbean origin" in British schools. It reveals that such underachievement does indeed exist and that much can be done to reverse it. The author observed 25 children of Caribbean descent in primary schools judged to be "positive" in their approaches to such children. She then set this information against earlier research studies and created a model by which all the factors on children's performance in schools can be considered. These factors were: family and friendship patterns; innate ability; motivation and compliance on the part of the pupil; the school curriculum; resources; ethos qand the attitudes of teachers. The book sets out practical approaches for schools to help their pupils of Caribbean background and ensure that these children leave primary schools confident and motivated.
